Oilers’ Connor McDavid Sends Emotional Message After Blue Jays World Series Loss
Connor McDavid spoke emotionally after the Toronto Blue Jays’ heartbreaking World Series loss. The Edmonton Oilers captain shared his thoughts following his team’s 3-2 overtime win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.
During the game, the Blue Jays’ Game 7 against the Dodgers was shown on the arena screens. McDavid admitted it was distracting but said the players and fans were all pulling for Toronto to claim its first World Series title since 1993.
“That was really, really strange,” McDavid said about Jays’ game on the Jumbotron. “Obviously, we’re all on the Jays bandwagon, and everybody’s wanting them to win, and it was so disappointing, obviously, but strange, strange to have it on during the game. Listening to the crowd was distracting for sure.”
Even McDavid couldn’t stop himself from watching the Jays game while he was on the bench. The Oilers captain helped Canada win the 4 Nations Face-Off championship in February with his overtime golden goal.
“It was bizarre. I found myself watching the Jays game, sitting on the bench,” McDavid said. “You know, listening to the crowd while I’m on the ice, you know, what just happened. It was very strange.”
The Blue Jays lost 5-4 in 11 innings after leading for most of the game. McDavid said he understood their pain, recalling Edmonton’s own Game 7 loss in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. He helped the Oilers reach another final in 2025 but lost in Game 6.
“But you know what, historic moment, couldn’t be more gutted for those guys,” McDavid said. “Obviously, we know what that feels like. It’s, and for it to be the way it happened, you know, just completely gutted for those guys. It’s been a fun run and been a lot of fun. They’ve given Canada a lot to cheer about, and they should be very, very proud of themselves.”
McDavid added that sports bring people together, and the Blue Jays made everyone proud in Canada.
“I keep on saying, ‘This is what sports is all about, bringing people together,'” McDavid said. “And for the last — throughout the summer and the last two months especially, they’ve really brought people together. And that’s what it’s all about. So, as I said, those guys can be very proud, hold their heads high. It was a special group.”
Despite the distraction, McDavid managed three assists, including one on the overtime winner by Evan Bouchard. The Oilers and Blue Jays both came close to ending Canada’s long championship droughts, and McDavid clearly felt the Jays’ pain.
