Former President Joe Biden has characterized this period as “dark days” while urging Americans to maintain hope and stand against Donald Trump.
“Since its founding, America served as a beacon for the most powerful idea ever in government in the history of the world,” ex President Biden said. “The idea is stronger than any army. We’re more powerful than any dictator.”
The 82 year old Biden, making his first public appearance since completing radiation treatment for an aggressive form of prostate cancer, addressed a Boston crowd on Sunday evening after receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Edward M. Kennedy Institute.
He stressed that America depends on a presidency with limited power, a functioning Congress and an independent judicial system.
Joe Biden had some firey words for his rival, Donald Trump
With the federal government experiencing its second-longest shutdown in history, Trump has used the funding crisis to demand increased authority over government functions.
“Friends, I can’t sugarcoat any of this. These are dark days” Biden proclaimed before predicting the country would “find our true compass again” and “emerge as we always have – stronger, wiser and more resilient, more just, so long as we keep the faith.”, reports the Mirror US.
Biden spotlighted cases of people standing firm against pressure from the current administration, referencing federal employees who resigned in protest, as well as universities and comedians who found themselves in Trump’s crosshairs. “The late night hosts continue to shine a light on free speech knowing their careers are on the line,” he declared.
Donald Trump was issued a brutal blow
Biden also commended Republican leaders who cast votes against or openly criticized the Trump administration. “America is not a fairy tale,” he stated.
“For 250 years, it’s been a constant push and pull, an existential struggle between peril and possibility.”
He wrapped up his speech by encouraging people to “get back up.”
The Democrat left office in January following a single term. Biden pulled out of his reelection bid after mounting pressure following a disastrous debate showing against Trump and rising worries about his age, health and mental sharpness.

Vice President Kamala Harris immediately kicked off her campaign following his withdrawal, but eventually fell to Trump last November.
In May, Biden’s post-presidential team disclosed that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.
Prostate cancers receive severity rankings through what’s known as a Gleason score. The scale runs from 6 to 10, with ratings of 8, 9 and 10 signaling more aggressive forms of cancer. Biden’s team reported his score was 9.
