China Condemns U.S. at UN Security Council Over Capture of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro

At an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council convened to address escalating tensions over Venezuela, China sharply condemned the United States for the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, calling the action a grave violation of international law and demanding his immediate release.

Speaking before the Council, China accused Washington of acting unilaterally and disregarding widespread international concerns, arguing that the move trampled on Venezuela’s sovereignty, national security, and what Beijing described as its “legitimate rights and interests.” Chinese representatives said the action undermines the core principle of sovereign equality enshrined in the UN Charter and sets a dangerous precedent for international relations.

According to China, the capture of a sitting head of state without international authorization represents a direct challenge to the rules-based international order. Beijing warned that such actions erode trust among nations and risk plunging the global system into greater instability.

“No country can act as the world’s police, nor can any state presume to be the international judge,” China’s envoy told the Council, in a pointed rebuke of U.S. foreign policy. The statement accused Washington of engaging in “bullying and coercive practices” under the guise of enforcing justice, while ignoring diplomatic norms and multilateral processes.

China called on the United States to immediately reverse course, release Maduro, and resolve disputes through dialogue rather than force. Beijing also urged the Security Council to play a more active role in defending international law and preventing what it characterized as the abuse of power by individual states.

The emergency meeting highlighted deep divisions within the Security Council, with several countries expressing concern over the broader implications of the incident for state sovereignty and global stability. As tensions continue to rise, the situation has intensified debates over unilateral action, accountability, and the limits of power in international affairs.
