Fans came out in droves to see Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni’s It Ends With Us when it premiered in August 2024. But many were left wondering — will there be a sequel?

It Ends With Us is based on Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel of the same name. The story revolves around Lily Bloom (Lively) and Ryle Kincaid (Baldoni) as they start a relationship. However, their partnership starts to go downhill as Ryle becomes abusive to Lily. Enter Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), who Lily knew in high school and reminds her of what love can be.

Six years after the novel came out, Hoover released a sequel, It Starts With Us, which picks up where the first leaves off, following along Lily and Atlas’ relationship. The It Ends With Us movie ends more ambiguously than the epilogue in the book — in which Atlas and Lily fully reunite — leaving fans yearning for more.

I haven’t. I have no idea what that story would be,” Baldoni said. “I’m somebody who’s just doing my best to stay in the present and stay in the here and in the now and not think too far ahead.”

He added, “I’m just kind of doing my best to take this all in because it’s been five years to even get us here. So I can’t even fathom another story yet.”

While Baldoni may not be attached yet, here’s everything to know about whether there may be an It Ends With Us sequel in the future.

It Ends With Us leaves off with a bit more ambiguity than it does in the book. In the novel’s epilogue, Lily runs into Atlas one day with her daughter while she’s on her way to meet Ryle. After dropping her daughter off, Lily comes back to find Atlas and tells him her daughter’s middle name is “Dory,” in honor of their shared favorite character from Finding Nemo.

She tells Atlas she’s ready to be loved and the book ends with him kissing her tattoo and telling her, “You can stop swimming now, Lily. We finally reached the shore.”

While the movie also sees Lily leave Ryle, she doesn’t reunite with Atlas as explicitly. The film ends on a cliffhanger as they both reveal to each other that they are currently single and begin to draw near before the film cuts to black.
