Fuming Wimbledon star kicks coach out of her box midway through quarter-final

There were unusual scenes during Jelena Ostapenko’s Wimbledon quarter-final defeat to Barbora Krejcikova on Court No.1 on Wednesday as the Latvian banished a coach from her box – but only after her team were baffled at which one of them she wanted to leave.

Ostapenko was 4-3 up in the second set against the Czech but was involved in an agitated incident during which she gestured to her box that she wanted somebody one of them out.

But there were amusing images on BBC Two as nobody could work out who exactly the 14th seed wanted to leave the court as they pointed at one another with confused expressions. Eventually the man in question, seemingly Stas Khmarsky, left the arena.

Watching on, BBC commentator Pete Odgers said: “This is what we were talking about with Ostapenko. There is never a dull moment. She’s motioning to her box – not sure if she was motioning for someone to leave but right now she’s not happy.”

Tracy Austin added: “He’s saying ‘Me? You want me to leave?’ That’s a lot of power!” Before Odgers said: “He’s saying, ‘Why?’ As I said, right on cue, never a dull moment when Jelena Ostapenko is on a tennis court.”
