Iga Swiatek reaches third round of Wimbledon with straight-set victory over Petra Martic
The world No. 1 has now reached the third round of every Grand Slam event this decade, the only player to do so.
Iga Swiatek has defeated Petra Martic in the second round of Wimbledon, 6-4, 6-3, to extend her incredible 2024 winning streak to 21 matches in a row. She hasn’t lost a match since April, when she fell to Elena Rybakina in the semifinals of Stuttgart.
And there’s more: she maintains her status as the only player to reach the third round.
For the second straight match, Swiatek served up a storm—she held all 10 of her service games without facing a break point. And just like her last match she had more winners than unforced errors, 25 to 19 this time, including three aces to two double faults.
She closed the Croat out after an hour and 23 minutes on court.
Awaiting the five-time Grand Slam champion in the third round will be Yulia Putintseva, who took out No. 27 seed Katerina Siniakova in her second-round match, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
Swiatek has beaten Putintseva in straight sets in all four of their previous meetings, though this will be their first on grass.
