ABC World News Tonight viewers were in for a dramatic twist as anchor David Muir left the studio to report live from Philadelphia.

As usual, 51 year old David, who was not at his customary ABC desk for Wednesday’s (October 22) episode, delivered the latest global news and updates, including a startling revelation about President Donald Trump’s clampdown on drug cartels.

Facing the camera, the veteran journalist started off with, “Good evening from Philadelphia tonight. You can see Independence Hall right here behind us, and why we’re here a bit later in the broadcast, but we do begin tonight with the breaking news.

“For the first time, the US launching a deadly military attack on a suspected drug boat, this time in the Pacific, off of Central America. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth Tonight posting the video online showing the boat taking a direct hit, the boat burning on the water,” he continued.

“Authorities say two people on board were killed, Hegseth said, saying the boat was traveling along known drug trafficking route, comparing drug cartels to Al Qaeda,” David further elaborated for the viewers. “At least 34 people have now been killed in eight known strikes carried out by the US military.”

David then updated viewers on the unfolding story, stating, “Just moments ago, President Trump tonight reacting to the images just released and what he’s now saying about his authority to target these boats in international waters and about potential targets on land.”

He then wrapped up his portion of the segment by transitioning to ABC News Chief National Correspondent Matt Gutman. The chilling footage of the airstrike destroying the suspected drug vessel was subsequently broadcast as Matt provided background to the footage through voice-over narration, stating, “Tonight for the first time, US launching a deadly air strike on a suspected drug boat in the eastern Pacific Ocean of Central America, a major expansion of President Trump’s war on the cartels.”

The correspondent featured an additional clip of President Trump discussing the attack. “We’re allowed to do that, and if we do (it) by land, we may go back to Congress,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday.

He noted that his administration was “totally prepared” to broaden the anti-drug operations on land, which would represent a significant escalation. A segment of the coverage was posted on ABC World News Tonight’s Instagram account, accompanied by the caption, “For the first time, the U.S. launched a deadly airstrike on a suspected drug boat in the Pacific Ocean, in a major expansion of Pres. Trump’s war on cartels. In the past two months, the U.S. has conducted eight deadly strikes on boats. @mattgutmanabc reports.”

Viewers were swift to respond to the contentious news, with one user questioning, “Can’t they approach and check first?” while another inquired, “Where were they going? Not enough fuel to make it to the US. Where’s the proof of who these people are?” One visibly irate fan confessed, “I have never cried, screamed or yelled out in anger as many times as I have in the past 10 months. This is disgusting, just like everything else this administration is doing.

“They have no idea if these parties are guilty of drug smuggling and since when is it justified to kill for drug smuggling or dealing? Crazy ….no due process,” another person commented. Meanwhile, a fifth individual expressed, “Have absolutely no trust that they had any evidence,” while a sixth chimed in with, “No evidence. No legal authority. Just crimes against humanity.”
