Iga Świątek, mimo dwóch grupowych zwycięstw, nie awansowała do półfinału WTA Finals i nie obroniła tym samym wywalczonego przed rokiem tytułu. Grę Polki w Rijadzie przeanalizował słynny John McEnroe. Wskazał istotny problem i wyraził zdziwienie.

W stolicy Arabii Saudyjskiej, gdzie przeniosła się w tym roku kończąca zmagania w cyklu WTA impreza, Świątek rozpoczęła turniej od zwycięstwa 4:6, 7:5, 6:2 nad Czeszką Barborą Krejcikovą. Zakończyła zdeklasowaniem 6:1, 6:0 Rosjanki Darii Kasatkiny.

W międzyczasie przegrała jednak 3:6, 4:6 z Amerykanką Coco Gauff i właśnie ta porażka przesądziła o jej odpadnięciu z turnieju. Polka nie obroniła zatem wywalczonego rok temu w meksykańskim Cancun tytułu.
