Hulk Hogan, one of the most iconic figures in professional wrestling during the 1980s and 1990s, rose to prominence at a time when the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) was expanding its reach across the United States and eventually the globe.
However, Hogan’s life took a controversial turn due to significant legal troubles involving the media company Gawker.
The controversy began in 2013 when private videos of Hogan, which included racist comments, were leaked. These videos were recorded by his friend, Bubba the Love Sponge.
The scandal led WWE to sever ties with Hogan, effectively pushing him out of the public eye.
Three years later, Hogan won a historic legal battle against Gawker, with the court awarding him $120 million in damages, a verdict that ultimately bankrupted the media company.
This legal battle has inspired director Gus Van Sant to adapt the story into a movie titled Killing Gawker, with Oscar-winning screenwriter Charles Randolph attached to the project.
The film is based on the 2018 book Conspiracy: Peter Thiel, Hulk Hogan, Gawker, and the Anatomy of Intrigue by Ryan Holiday.
