In a fit of pique, Donald Trump has declared an end to “all trade negotiations” with Canada, blaming television advertisements for his decision.

The President expressed his belief that the “egregious behavior” displayed in these ads was intended to sway US court rulings and counter tariffs. The escalating trade tensions between the US and Canada have been brewing for some time, and Trump’s sudden decision to halt talks is expected to further exacerbate the situation.

Posting on Truth Social, 79-year-old Trump stated: “The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs.

“The ad was for $75,000. They only did this to interfere with the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, and other courts. TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE USA. Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had previously expressed his intention to double his country’s exports to nations outside the US due to the threat posed by Trump’s tariffs, reports the Mirror.

However, Carney’s office has not yet responded to requests for comment. The 60 year old prime minister departed Friday morning for a summit in Asia, while Trump is scheduled to do the same tonight.

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute took to social media last night, claiming that an advertisement by the Ontario government “misrepresents the ‘Presidential Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade’ from April 25, 1987.”

The foundation added that Ontario did not secure permission “to use and edit the remarks.” The foundation is currently “reviewing legal options in this matter” and has encouraged the public to view the unedited video of Reagan’s address.

Earlier this month, Mr. Trump met with Mr. Carney in an attempt to alleviate trade tensions as the U.S., Canada, and Mexico gear up for a review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement – a trade pact negotiated during Trump’s first term, which he has since grown disillusioned with.

Earlier this week, Mr. Trump mentioned seeing the ad on TV and claimed it demonstrated the impact of his tariffs. He stated: “I saw an ad last night from Canada. If I was Canada, I’d take that same ad also.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford shared a link to the ad on social media last week, announcing: “It’s official: Ontario’s new advertising campaign in the U.S. has launched.”

He added: “Using every tool we have, we’ll never stop making the case against American tariffs on Canada. The way to prosperity is by working together.”
