🧭 What exactly was said?
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said: “He told me, ‘I will never do it as long as you’re president.’ … President Xi told me that … and I said, ‘Well, I appreciate that.’”
He added that Xi also stressed: “But I am very patient, and China is very patient.”

More recently Trump down-played the risk of invasion: “China doesn’t want to do that… I don’t see anything happening.”

In short: Trump says he has been personally assured that China will hold off on any invasion of Taiwan, at least during his presidency.
🌍 Why this matters
Taiwan is a flash-point. China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and has not renounced the use of force to achieve “reunification.”
U.S. role is ambiguous. The U.S. recognises Beijing (under the “One China” policy) but also is Taiwan’s biggest international backer and arms supplier. That creates a high-stakes triangle of risk.

✅ Why Trump’s claim might hold water
Relationship leverage. Trump suggests he has a personal rapport with Xi, which may provide him access to behind-the-scenes assurances that others don’t have.
China’s patience. The quoted line “China is very patient” may reflect a strategy: wait for the right moment, rather than rush into war, making the short-term risk lower.
Deterrence narrative. Trump emphasises U.S. military strength as part of the reasoning: “Nobody’s going to mess with that.”

Trade/geopolitical incentives. China may prefer to avoid a full-scale confrontation for now, given global economic vulnerabilities, internal challenges, and its other priorities.
❌ Why we should be sceptical
Assurance ≠ binding commitment. A verbal assurance from Xi, as relayed by Trump, is not a treaty or a concrete policy guarantee.
China’s long-term strategic interest. Many analysts believe that Xi still sees Taiwan as a core objective — even if the timing is uncertain. The threat remains real.
Mixed messaging / ambiguity. While Trump says China won’t invade, the U.S. has otherwise indicated heightened vigilance, and China continue
